Bucket Brigade : The Ice Cream Connection
In the Summer of 2011, we continued our Bucket Brigade in Logan Park. Buckets of ice cream were carried out into the park, and ice cream cones were passed from our hands to the hands of our neighbors. In this way, we shared and enjoyed the sweet treat of ice cream on warm summer nights.
But there was a value here that goes beyond sharing our dessert. A “brigade” can be defined as a group of people dedicated to a common cause. What is the common cause of this brigade, you ask? For Abbey Way, by sharing our ice cream with our neighbors in Logan Park each Sunday evening, we dedicated ourselves to the practice of hospitality. We hope that last summer’s Bucket Brigade is marked by the love and joy of Christ as we get to know more of our neighbors.
Kick Ball Game : Continuing with a fun connection.
Abbey Way loves to play. Through joy and laughter we learn the deeper things of making space for each other as we each push past our own barriers to have some good old fashioned fun—old and young together.
Even for those who don’t play kickball, there are many ways to join in the game that may not mean being on the field. We need first and second base coaches, we need audiences who encourage the teams by cheering them on! While we play and cheer; we have the opportunity to get to know people we don’t know; better. We can ask questions and enjoy the game with them; either as we play or as we support the game with our presence.
In these ways we reveal how a loving community works and plays which helps create a picture of hope for those around us. It may help them see something different than what they are used to; it might create in them a desire for more. This is why we chose to create the opportunity to play a game each Summer Sunday evening in which all are made welcome. Through play, God works. How great is that!
